1st time photo contest: got butterflies?
Urquhart Butterfly Garden
Photo contest
July 5 – August 30
For the first time in its twenty-year history, Dundas Urquhart Butterfly Garden in Dundas will be hosting a competition for photographers this summer, beginning on July 5th. All entries must be taken from the paths of the Urquhart Butterfly Garden. Awards will include cash prizes and gift certificates. Prizes will be awarded in two divisions, youth under 18 and adults. There are four award categories:
Butterflies & moths;
Insects spiders, and 'bugs';
Birds and other wildlife;
Plants and flowers.
“The Urquhart Butterfly Garden has been a destination for photographers since the day it opened,” said Joanna Chapman, the UBG's founder and co-ordinator. “We see this competition as a way to celebrate the amazing work local photographers have done here and also would like to encourage new photographers, young and old, to take part. Young people particularly are urged to enter this competition, all that is required is a pair of sharp eyes.” Burlington Camera has generously supplied cameras which may be borrowed by anyone who may not have a suitable camera.
Judges for the contest are: Sandy Bell of the Hamilton Conservation Authority; Julie Bridger, of the Dundas Valley School of Art; and Cathie Coward, of the Hamilton Spectator.
Judging will commence after the conclusion of the competition on August 30th. Prizes will be awarded on Saturday September 20th, at a celebration of the competition to be held at the Hamilton Airforce Association adjacent to the garden .There will be an exhibition of the photographs, at the Air Force Club, for 3 days prior to the award ceremony, and 3 days afterwards.
In this moment where the Monarch and many other butterfly species are threatened with extinction, photography can be a powerful tool for raising awareness about these beautiful and important creatures.
