Supporting Health Care Workers Who Support Refugees' Human Rights
OPIRG McMaster board of directors’ public statement
In light of the events that took place during Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq’s funding announcement at McMaster University, Thursday, July 19th, 2012, OPIRG McMaster offers our unconditional support to Dr. Kraeker and Dr. O’Shea.
The actions taken by Dr. Kraeker and Dr. O’Shea demonstrated leadership of courage and integrity that merits the support of the McMaster community for its dedication to public health and the public interest. Their protest helped bring awareness of the neglect of health care being provided to refugees in this country; an issue that hits home for Hamilton, given that this city becomes the home for around 10 per cent of the annual landed refugees in this country.
We are confident that both Dr. Kraeker and Dr. O’Shea will not face any form of disciplinary action, and instead be recognized for their leadership.
The public needs more doctors with this example of integrity.
