Poverty Initiative Research Position

The McMaster University Poverty Initiative is a group of students, staff, faculty and community members who seek to be engaged with the local community on the issue of poverty reduction. The goal is to develop a research institute/centre whose work will directly benefit the people of Hamilton and the surrounding areas. The focus of the centre’s work will be on enhancing and understanding the meaning and consequences of poverty particularly as it intersects with race, gender, class, immigration status and ability – in order to inform and advocate for the systemic changes needed to eliminate it.

We seek a student who is a self-starter, but able to work collaboratively to gather information both on campus and in the community. The candidate will need to demonstrate sensitive interviewing skills and the flexibility to meet with individuals in greater Hamilton about the specific needs of their community. They should demonstrate good organizational and time management skills, and be competent in analyzing and presenting data. The student will assist the steering committee in grant writing for funding for the proposed Centre for Social Innovation and Social Change.

The grant for 15 hours per week for 24 weeks will be administered by OPIRG McMaster. Compensation is $12 per hour in addition to a 4% vacation benefit. The student will meet regularly (at least once a month) with the Steering Team. Space and resources will be determined and provided by Chaplaincy Centre and Service Learning.
